PBS Rollover Standard Proposed in Forestry Log Haulage Industry Code of Practice

With the safety benefits of Performance Based Standards (PBS) showing an overall improvement in safety of 60% when compared to the conventional fleet* , it is not surprising safety standards of the PBS scheme are now being considered by industries reliant on road freight transport.

One such industry is the logging industry and at present the Draft Forestry Log Haulage Industry Code of Practice is proposing to introduce the same Static Roll Threshold (SRT) that exists in PBS, being a minimum of 0.35g on each hauling unit, to reduce the likelihood of rollover. Through discussions with industry, it is understood that current contracts that are being tendered for, already contain this requirement.

As accredited PBS Assessors, Advantia was well placed to assist Padgett Group with the SRT assessments of their Logging Truck and Dogs and B-Doubles to equip the business with the necessary loading information and details to comply with the minimum 0.35g requirement. The outputs provided by Advantia to Padgett Group also serve as evidence for compliance with contractual or Industry Code requirements.

Given the safety outcomes achieved by the introduction of PBS combinations into Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet, similar safety outcomes are likely to be realised by the adoption of PBS safety standards by existing prescriptive (non-PBS) combinations like those used in logging.
